Affordable, Custom Wood 'Box-Type' Cremation Urns and Burial Boxes
Cremation Urns come in two basic styles - 'vase-type' cremation urns and 'box-type' cremation urns. Human cremation ashes typically come from the funeral home in plastic bags inside cardboard or hard plastic boxes/containers. Vase-type cremation urns are designed to hold the plastic bags, box-type cremation urns are made to hold the ash containers/boxes. (As of this writing, we have not made any 'vase-type' cremation urns for human cremation ashes.)
'Ash containers' come in different sizes (depending on the funeral home or crematory), but usually have fairly unique dimensions. Each of our wood 'box-type' Cremation Urns / Burial Boxes is individually handcrafted to the specific dimensions of these ash containers - allowing a little clearance and taking into consideration the ultimate destination of the cremation ashes.

Destinations of Cremated Ashes / Cremation Urns
Typically there are three ultimate destinations for Cremation Urns containing the cremated ashes of a loved one: 1) ashes to be entombed in a burial vault; 2) ashes to be kept by a surviving loved one; or 3) ashes to be 'scattered'.
Cremation Ashes placed in a Burial Vault
Cremation urns / boxes for ashes to be entombed in a Burial Vault are made not only to hold the cremation ash container, but also to fit into the burial vault dimensions. This cremation urn / box was custom made of American Walnut with Maple accent on the lid. The slightly tapered sides and the dark wood gave this urn a more formal, refined appearance. (interior walls of all of our cremation boxes are perpendicular to the base) Cremation urns to be placed in burial vaults have interiors finished with a moisture resistant varnish. **Cremation Urns & Burial Boxes can also be custom made of unfinished pine.**
Cremation Ashes kept in Memorial Boxes
Many times cremation ashes of a loved one are kept in the home, as a permanent memorial. These cremation urns / cremation boxes are also made for the dimensions of the cremation ash containers. The lids are made to fit quite tightly, and can be permanently attached once the ash container is placed inside. The cremation urn shown was custom made of Oak with a Walnut base and lid. The customer wanted simple lines but quality workmanship. The sides taper slightly in at the top and at the base to give it a softer appearance. Thick felt pads/feet were added to the bottom of the box.
Cremation Ashes to be Scattered
Even if the cremated ashes are to be scattered, many people want a nice (but affordable) cremation urn or box to have at the memorial service or as an attractive, temporary container until the ashes can be scattered. In these cases, the lid is made to fit snuggly - but which can be easily removed when the time comes to spread the ashes. This cremation urn / box was handcrafted of Hickory for a more casual feel, and its meaning to the family. The wood was carefully selected for the unique coloring - the darker color symbolizing the physical earth, and the lighter - the spiritual heavens.
Unique, Individually Handcrafted Wooden Boxes
VanEss Expressions is not in the memorial services business. We are woodworkers creating original & custom wood gifts and home decor items - including unique, decorative wooden boxes. All of the wood items we sell are our own original designs, individually handcrafted by us in our Minnesota workshop. We do not import any products, materials or services.
From the requests we've received, it appears that there are many people looking for quality cremation urns and cremation burial boxes who are not satisfied with the products that are out there. They are looking for something special - something truly unique - something more personalized than the off-the-shelf cremation urns and cremation burial boxes being offered.
Again, we are not in the memorial services business. We do not stock Cremation Urns or Burial Boxes nor do we have a 'product line' or a price list of cremation urns and boxes for you to choose from. We also do not offer the companion products or services offered by those in the memorial services business. What we do offer is a quality, yet affordable alternative - attractive, individually handmade, solid wood boxes to hold your loved one's cremated ashes.
All of our wood cremation urns and burial boxes are custom made to the specific requirements, needs, and personal tastes of our customers. Our standard woods are Oak, Maple, Hickory, Ash Cherry and Walnut (other types of wood are also available). And (as with all of our wooden boxes) our box-type Cremation Urns and Burial Boxes have the distinctive and decorative box-joint corners.
Prices are based on the size, shape, design details and type of wood(s) requested, and IF an order is accepted - depending on the request and our current workload - we would need a minimum of 4 weeks, after the specifics are worked out.
We have partnered with a local engraver that does very nice, reasonable work - allowing us to offer custom laser engraving as an option for our handmade wood items. (wood laser engraving )
